Future of Privacy Forum is a nonprofit organization that serves as a catalyst for privacy leadership and scholarship, advancing principled data practices in support of emerging technologies. FPF brings together industry, academics, consumer advocates, and other thought leaders to explore the challenges posed by technological innovation and develop privacy protections, ethical norms, and workable business practices. FPF helps fill the void in the “space not occupied by law” which exists due to the speed of technology development. As “data optimists,” we believe that the power of data for good is a net benefit to society, and that it can be well-managed to control risks and offer the best protections and empowerment to consumers and individuals.


The Communications Associate will create and implement the FPF Education and Innovation Foundation’s Education Privacy Project communications strategic plan, increasing the visibility, accessibility, understanding, and reach of student privacy work and activities. The Associate will be responsible for maintaining FERPA|Sherpa: the Education Privacy Resource Center Website, including updating content, editing and publishing blogs from a variety of stakeholders, and creating new content in coordination with the Director of the Education Privacy Project. They will also aid in proofreading, editing, creating spin-off short blogs or op-eds, and coordinating the release of publications and resources. The ideal candidate will be an excellent editor and writer; care passionately about improving education data use and privacy protections for all students; have a strong desire to effect change in the world; be able to translate complicated legal or technical topics for a lay audience; have the ability to remain professional and impartial while working in a political environment; and have a sense of humor. This is a full-time position in the Washington D.C. office.

Task Responsibilities:

The Communications Associate will:

  • Develop and implement an external communications strategy in coordination with the Director of the Education Privacy Project to maximize the distribution of student privacy resources to key stakeholders;
  • Draft op-eds, blogs, talking points, and press releases based on student privacy resources from FPF or other organizations;
  • Edit, assist with design and layout, coordinate, and amplify publication releases;
  • Update and create rich and substantive content for the education privacy resource center website, FERPA|Sherpa, and associated web and social media channels;
  • Work with stakeholders to solicit, edit, post, and share blogs for FERPA|Sherpa;
  • Monitor and share student privacy developments;
  • Engage and maintain relationships with the press and connect FPF’s staff with viable media opportunities;
  • Help to draft publications as appropriate;
  • Support Policy Counsel in communicating with FPF members regarding student privacy issues;
  • Monitor communications-related analytics; and
  • Conduct other tasks as appropriate to support FPF’s work.

Position Requirements:

  • Graduate degree and/or equivalent experience in communications, public affairs, advocacy or journalism; and a demonstrated interest/knowledge related to one or more of these fields: education, privacy, security, or technology policy.
  • Two to five years’ experience in journalism, communications, or public affairs.
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills, including superior editing and proofreading skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to convey ideas and positions to technical and nontechnical audiences both orally and in writing.
  • Experience with media inquiries and/or working with journalists or in the media.
  • Experience with distributing organizational or company resources to stakeholder groups.
  • A demonstrated ability to work efficiently, meet deadlines, and manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work effectively and seamlessly with a wide variety of people.
  • Detail-oriented.
  • Strong work ethic, sense of humor, flexibility, creativity, and a professional demeanor.
  • Ability to travel occasionally for the organization.
  • Familiarity with WordPress, coding languages, and graphic design.
