General Overview:
FPF is seeking a Policy Counsel or Senior Counsel (depending on experience) to advance our mission to support principled data practices. Key responsibilities for the position will include: working with the FPF team and leadership to define and execute a strategic vision for FPF’s work on data protection issues that are relevant to companies, individuals, and policymakers; undertaking independent research, analysis, and writing on emerging legal and policy issues related to privacy and technology; leading outreach and collaboration with FPF stakeholders, interest groups, civil society organizations, relevant government agencies, academics, and other key partners; and organizing events and meetings with stakeholders, both in person and virtual. Preference for candidates with experience in one of the following subject matter areas: mobility and location data, youth privacy, or cybersecurity. This is a full-time position with a strong preference for a candidate located in Washington, D.C.
Key responsibilities for this role include:
- Strategic planning for FPF’s organizational objectives;
- Conducting legal and policy analysis and development of recommendations related to emerging issues and regulatory considerations concerning data protection;
- Research and writing on emerging issues related to privacy and technology, including drafting regulatory filings, white papers, and legislative analyses;
- Leading outreach, engagement, and collaboration with FPF communities and stakeholders, which may include relevant companies, government agencies, academics, and other key partners. This will encompass leadership of a relevant FPF working group, which includes the publication of regular member-only newsletters and virtual meetings;
- Effective communication of key ideas and responses to new and emerging developments through blog posts, media interviews, and representation at public panel presentations and events;
- In coordination with FPF’s operations professionals, organization of events and meetings with stakeholders, both in person and virtual.
Required Qualifications:
- J.D. or Masters degree in a related field, or equivalent experience
- 2-5 years of experience in relevant legal, policy, or technical positions
- Familiarity with relevant U.S. and European privacy laws and regulations
- Excellent verbal communication skills and demonstrated ability to communicate key ideas in writing with relevant stakeholders, including tailoring materials to the appropriate audience
- Interest in emerging trends in technology and implications for users and society
- Demonstrated project planning, research, and organizational skills
Salary Range: Policy Counsel $85,000-$110,000 / Senior Counsel $110,000-$135,000
