General Overview
FPF is seeking to hire a Senior Policy Lead to support its work on artificial intelligence, machine learning, and other decision-making systems.
This role will support the organization’s portfolio of projects exploring the data flows driving algorithmic and AI products, including generative AI, the possible harms, and the available mitigation measures.
Key responsibilities for the position include: working with the FPF team to help define and execute the strategic vision for FPF’s Data, Decision-Making, and Artificial Intelligence workstream and portfolio; growing and managing a team of experts at FPF to support this vision; staying abreast of the latest developments in the related technology areas; analyzing and writing focused on the ethical, legal, and policy issues presented by these developing technologies, with an emphasis on automated decision-making systems; leading outreach and collaboration with FPF stakeholders, interest groups, civil society organizations, relevant government agencies, academics, and other key partners; and organizing events and meetings with stakeholders, both in-person and virtual.
This is a full-time position based in the Washington, DC office. FPF maintains a hybrid work environment where staff are currently only required to work in-office two days per week.
Responsibilities
- Strategic planning for FPF’s organizational objectives relating to the portfolio of automated decision-making technologies
- Managing a team of experts working on issues in this space and overseeing work product and professional development
- Collaborating with FPF colleagues to identify and analyze the implications of AI in their workstreams, e.g. health privacy, connected vehicles, and immersive technology.
- Analyzing the risks, benefits, and ethical implications of algorithmically-based decision-making systems – including evaluations of open source or other datasets and ML-based model design and implementation
- Pursuing legal and policy analysis and development of recommendations related to AI and automated decision system issues and applicable regulatory considerations
- Researching and writing on emerging issues related to privacy and technology, drafting filings for regulatory purposes, drafting white papers or other written analyses
- Coordinating outreach, engagement, and collaboration with FPF corporate stakeholders, as well as with relevant interest groups, government agencies, academics, and other key partners, including monthly working groups, associated newsletters, and other timely updates and communications
- Providing commentary about algorithmic-related developments or legislative analysis through blog posts, media interviews, and representation at public panel presentations and events
- Providing oversight for FPF’s grant-funded projects related to corporate and academic data sharing, including project management of subcontractors
- Organizing events and meetings with stakeholders, both in person and virtual
Qualifications
- J.D. or relevant degree in a related field (or equivalent experience)
- Minimum 5-7 years experience in relevant legal, policy, or technical positions with specific knowledge of applicability to artificial intelligence or other related technology and systems as described
- Basic technical understanding of artificial intelligence/machine learning technologies
- Basic familiarity with biometrics, facial recognition, and/or digital identity technology (desired)
- Familiarity with related U.S., European and/or global legislative privacy laws
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Interest in emerging trends in technology and implications for users and society
- Demonstrated project planning, research, and organizational skills
