The Future of Privacy Forum (“FPF”) is a non-profit organization that serves as a catalyst for privacy leadership and scholarship, advancing principled data practices in support of emerging technologies. FPF brings together industry, academics, consumer advocates, and other
thought leaders to explore the challenges posed by technological innovation and develop privacy protections, ethical norms and workable business practices.
FPF seeks interns with a keen interest in law, policy, and technology to support FPF’s Asia-Pacific office (“FPF APAC”). FPF APAC engages in a wide variety of issue areas related to the intersection of data protection, emerging technology, and evolving industry practices. This includes, for example, researching and analyzing the impact of new technologies, advising companies on emerging data practices, engaging with policymakers and partners, and conducting a variety of legal, technical, and policy research and thought leadership. Issue portfolios may include – but are not limited to – AI governance and regulation, cross-border data transfers, Privacy Enhancing Technologies (“PETs”), children’s data protection, regional data protection developments, online advertising, and immersive technologies.
Internship structure
- We recommend that FPF APAC interns participate minimally in a two-month in-person internship in Singapore, preferably for the months of June and July. The internship will be a full-time position.
- The FPF APAC internship is a hybrid internship (i.e., combining in-person and remote elements).
- Due to the global nature of FPF’s work, FPF APAC interns should be prepared to work across geographical time-zones and cultures. While we strive to ensure that the workload is sustainable and that adequate periods of rest are given, there may be a need at times to participate in meetings, events or calls that take place in the evening or night (Singapore Time).
What we look for
- We welcome undergraduate students (preferably in the second year of studies onwards), as well as any graduate-level academic or professional background (typically, this includes law students, MA/MBA, PhD students in a policy-related field, and/or career professionals), from a wide range of universities. The only “must-have” is a demonstrated interest in privacy and data protection.
Compensation
- FPF policy is to compensate interns, unless a student is receiving other funding (e.g. from their institution), or is choosing to receive academic credit from an institution or organization that does not allow them to be compensated.
- FPF APAC interns are paid at a rate of S$1,000 per month, pro-rated for partial months of work.
