Data

The Future of Privacy Forum (FPF) has a number of projects directly related to the use and sharing of corporate data for academic research. On September 22, 2020, FPF presented the Award for Research Data Stewardship and hosted a discussion about using corporate data for research. On September 25, 2020, FPF hosted a test of its Ethical Data Sharing Review Committee to facilitate trusted transfer of data between corporate and research organizations.

FPF Award for Research Data Stewardship

The Future of Privacy Forum Award for Research Data Stewardship is a first-of-its-kind award that recognizes a research partnership between a company that has shared data with an academic institution in a privacy protective manner, thereby driving the use of privately held data for academic research. When privately held data is responsibly shared with academic researchers, it can support significant progress in medicine, public health, education, social science, and other fields. But the data needed is often unavailable due to a range of concerns – including the need to protect individual privacy.

FPF is excited to announce the winners of the first-ever FPF Award for Research Data Stewardship:

Keep an eye out for next year’s award Call for Nominations, coming this winter.

The FPF Award for Research Data Stewardship is supported by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, a not-for-profit grant-making institution that supports high-quality, impartial scientific research and institutions.

Ethical Data Sharing Review Committees

As part of its commitment to responsible data sharing, FPF is launching an Ethical Data Sharing Review Committee, an independent panel to evaluate the risks and benefits of organizations’ data sharing projects with academic researchers. This review process is intended to evaluate the risks of sharing corporate data for academic research purposes, in a manner that will be relevant for broader review of machine learning projects and other services.

Information about the Ethical Data Sharing Review Committee will be added below.
