Salary Range: Manager $63,569 – $95,353
The Future of Privacy Forum (FPF), a dynamic global nonprofit organization that serves as a catalyst for privacy scholarship and advancing principled data practices in support of emerging technologies, is seeking a Global Communications Manager.
The Global Communications Manager is responsible for developing and implementing external communications strategy and managing all aspects of communications projects, systems, and tactics for FPF’s global work portfolio (mainly in the EU and APAC).
Partnering with members of FPF’s global team, as well as communications team members and vendors, the Global Communications Manager works to ensure FPF’s regional relevance to audiences while maintaining its overall brand and voice. The Global Communications Manager must be willing to occasionally work distributed hours outside of typical local working hours (i.e. 9am-6pm) as needed to meet and address time-sensitive needs with teams across the US, EU, and Asia-Pacific.
Primary Objectives:
- Develop and implement an external communications strategy for FPF’s global work with a focus on building FPF’s brand and media presence in Europe and the Asia-Pacific region (30%);
- Working with the FPF communications team and contractors, manage all day-to-day communications needs for FPF’s global programs, including websites, email marketing, social media, public relations, and other systems (40%);
- Facilitate collaboration across FPF offices, partners, and teams to identify needs, develop shared strategies, align communications and engagement efforts, and strengthen programmatic relationships (15%);
- Working closely with the Communications Director and events, membership, and IT teams contributes to developing external communications strategies and systems that support the goals of FPF and its programs (15%).
Essential Functions:
- Designs external communications strategies to target specific global audiences by region, placing an emphasis and discipline on campaign performance to help with recommendations for future programs.
- Working closely with global and communications teams, maintaining an editorial calendar for international work.
- Working with global and communications teams, develop and execute media strategies that leverage FPF’s unique global position and the expertise of key leadership.
- Manage global publications and social communications, including planning, review, design, and promotion (email, web, social) and evaluation.
- Collaborate with the Director of Communications and other communications staff, strategically planning communications projects and campaigns.
- Working closely with the Director of Communications, VP for Global Privacy, EU Managing Director, APAC Managing Director, and Deputy Directors to assist in developing an external communications strategy and messaging framework that includes a global perspective.
- Coordinate and oversee FPF’s global communications team meetings, agendas, project management, etc. Be involved in program planning meetings at an early stage to allow for proactive communications execution.
Other responsibilities:
- Provide on-the-ground communications support for various virtual and in-person events and activities throughout the year.
- Establish and maintain effective relationships with FPF vendors.
- Communicate with colleagues as needed through regular reporting, email, phone, and occasional face-to-face meetings.
- Travel internationally and work across multiple time zones at odd hours as necessary.
- All other duties as requested and needed to meet the FPF global team’s goals and FPF’s organizational communications priorities.
Qualifications & Competencies
The ideal candidate will have/be:
- Degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, or Marketing or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Five to seven years experience in communications/marketing.
- Experience working internationally across multiple cultures, languages, countries, and regions. (Working with European and Asia-Pacific regions preferred.)
- Strong project management skills and experience, including managing multiple priorities, motivating staff, and managing budgets.
- Demonstrated media experience, including placing articles and building relationships with journalists.
- Strategic experience with social media and effective writing for social media.
- Experience drafting and editing publications and other communications materials, including (but not limited to) press releases, reports, white papers, news articles, web content, etc.
- Experience with developing communications strategy, objectives, and delivery of agreed results
- Excellent written and oral presentation skills in English; at least one other language is preferred.
- Good diplomacy and communication (oral and written) skills.
- Ability to prioritize workloads and work to tight deadlines.
- Motivated, flexible, and able to work as a team member and on their own initiative when the situation demands.
- Experience collaborating with multicultural teams.
- Ability to identify opportunities for adding value to projects by interacting with other teams.
- Creative and enthusiastic.
- Experience working with WordPress, Hootsuite, Google Analytics, Drive tools, MailChimp, Slack, Zoom, and Monday.com. Adobe Creative Suite is a plus.
- Experience in performing proactive media outreach, maintaining working relationships with journalists, and generating positive media coverage while helping to mitigate and respond to negative media.
- Ability to work within a remote team environment.
- Experience in data protection, privacy, the tech sector, or public policy more generally is desirable.
