Position Overview:
The FPF Global Privacy team is expanding its team in Africa. The policy analyst will play a key role in providing expert privacy and data protection analysis and catalyzing collaboration with industry, policy organizations, academia, and regulators. We are looking for someone who is enthusiastic about exploring the nuances of privacy and data protection in a rapidly evolving policy environment, is motivated to work with global and regional thinkers, and is committed to shaping best practices, standards, policies regarding privacy and data protection for both regulators and industry in Africa, and is willing to contribute to capacity building of emergent regulatory agencies across the continent.
Key Responsibilities:
- Monitor legal, policy, and regulatory developments relating to privacy, emerging technologies, and data protection throughout the African continent.
- Research and draft a wide range of documents on issues relating to privacy, data protection, and technology policy, with a special focus on cross-border data transfers. Work products may include recurring newsletter updates, briefs, and reports for FPF members, as well as training content, toolkits, and reports for regulators and other government officials.
- Engage with stakeholders from government, industry, academia, and civil society from across the African region to advance FPF’s mission.
- Provide administrative and logistical support for the Africa office, including coordinating events, webinars, panels, and other activities.
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in law, with preference for candidates with an LLM or additional graduate degrees as well;
- Professional fluency in English and French is mandatory;
- Legal residence and the right to work in a West African or East African country;
- At least 2 years of relevant work experience in an African country (e.g. practicing at a marquee law firm or in-house for a leading company, service in a governmental agency, or in public policy) on issues relating to privacy, data protection, and/or cybersecurity, with additional preference for experience working on issues related to cross-border data transfers;
- Demonstrated interest and knowledge in privacy, data protection, and emerging technologies in African jurisdictions, with preference for experience working on issues related to cross-border data transfers;
- Demonstrated research, writing, and analytical skills, and the ability to learn, adapt, and find pragmatic solutions quickly in a fast-paced, rapidly evolving environment;
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills;
- Self-starter, with the ability to work independently and as a team player;
- Ability to work flexibly and productively in a hybrid work environment involving multiple time zones;
- Attention to detail, and the ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks simultaneously;
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, G Suite, and digital platforms such as Slack and Zoom.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Relevant work experience in a francophone African country;
- Literacy with and demonstrated interest in privacy, data protection, and technology policy and regulations in the African region, especially Nigeria and/or Côte d’Ivoire;
- Excellent research, writing, and analytical skills, with a track record of successful publications;
- Experience with event planning, managing relationships with external organizations, and project management;
Type of contract:
This engagement is to be performed under a contractor contract, on a determined 18 months period of time. Extension is possible depending on performance and funding.
Compensation:
45,000 – 60,000 USD per year, gross, depending on experience.
