General Overview
FPF is seeking a senior tech policy expert with significant expertise in data protection and AI governance to lead its U.S. policy workstreams. FPF is a global non-profit organization that convenes corporate leaders, academics, civil society, regulators, and policymakers to collaborate on data protection and technology initiatives that have real world consumer impact and advance the utility of data and information technologies. Through testimony to regulatory agencies worldwide and the sharing of research and insights via briefings, reports, and roundtables, FPF empowers stakeholders to navigate the evolving landscape of data protection and AI laws, technology regulation and digital governance. FPF also focuses on the development of responsible practices and perspectives to encourage innovation.
FPF operates offices in four countries with policy expertise across six continents, and brings the privacy and data protection community together through annual events, including the D.C. Privacy Forum, the Brussels Privacy Symposium, the Privacy Papers for Policymakers awards ceremony, and our annual meetings for Advisory Board members and Privacy Executives Summit conferences.
FPF provides a corporate membership for teams to stay up-to-date with in-depth tracking and analysis, network with their peers through regular expert video conferences, working groups, events and trainings, learn from senior leaders across sectors and locations, and access resources via the FPF Member Portal.
Based in Washington, DC and reporting to the CEO, the Vice President – U.S. Policy will serve as the lead strategist, coordinator, and overseer for the U.S. Policy Team, which includes three substantive verticals covering 11 working groups. The person in this role will help teams establish annual policy goals that track to organizational priorities, facilitate informed and strategic responses to relevant news and other developments, and manage team budget distributions. Candidates should have significant previous management experience.
As the data governance world continues to rapidly evolve, a successful person in this role should be flexible and able to rapidly adapt to significant shifts in priorities, policies, and practices. An ideal candidate will bring substantive expertise in data protection and a curiosity to explore the nuances that exist across distinct sectors or areas of data processing.
Job Duties, Responsibilities, and Standards
Management, Coordination, and Strategic Implementation for U.S. Policy Team (app. 30% of time)
- Work with the CEO, Global, AI, and Operations teams to set strategic organizational vision.
- Review and approve strategic goals and projects, including (as needed), working group agendas
- Meet with and oversee leaders of FPF substantive verticals and project managers
- Provide final approval for team projects, including coordination of further review with Leadership as appropriate / necessary
- Liaise between U.S. Policy Team members, the FPF Global team, the FPF Center for AI, and FPF Operations team.
- Continually evaluate the performance and execution of staff responsibilities, responding to team and individual needs and providing mentorship and other support as necessary
- Attend Working Group meetings when possible and provide feedback
Community Engagement (app. 20% of time)
- Attend and speak at public events on behalf of and in pursuit of the mission of FPF
- Meet with FPF members, and our broader stakeholder community, to advise, consult and garner feedback on priority issues.
- Oversee development and execution of FPF community calls
Policy Analysis and Engagement (app. 10% of time)
- Lead or coordinate on novel areas of interest and relevance to FPF
- Conduct, oversee, or contribute to new research
Internal Coordination, Operations, and Support (app. 20% of time)
- Ensure members of the U.S. Policy Team are coordinating with one another and other teams
- Ensure that FPF communications, events, and operations experts are informed of and, as relevant, including in planning for upcoming projects
- Attend and participate in cross-team meetings
- Stay informed of work of other teams and potential areas for collaboration and assisting with that collaboration when necessary
- Attend internal coordination, strategic, and visioning meetings and provide thoughts and feedback
- Participate in internal committees and attend relevant internal trainings, talks, discussions, and other conversations as relevant
Fundraising and development (20%)
- Work with FPF’s Membership and Grants teams to identify and secure funding opportunities, including corporate membership and foundation support
- Ensure U.S. Team execution of funded grant priorities
Performance Standards
- FPF staff are evaluated annually based on overall conduct in position-specific tasks and achievement of organizational priorities; project and people management; initiative; and communication and stakeholder engagement.
- Senior staff are empowered, expected to grow in their roles and build skills and confidence among internal team members as well as other community members;
- At the leadership level, FPF staff are responsible for helping to build FPF’s institutional knowledge, policy expertise, capacity, internal processes, value and ensure that FPF is producing high value, visible projects and publications that build FPF’s reputation and influence national and international policy.
Required Qualifications
- Advanced degree in a relevant field, or equivalent professional experience
- 10 or more years of experience demonstrating increasing responsibility and including direct oversight and management of multiple individuals
- Familiarity with relevant U.S. and global privacy laws and regulations
- Excellent verbal communication skills and demonstrated ability to communicate key ideas in writing with relevant stakeholders, including tailoring materials to the appropriate audience
- Interest in emerging trends in technology and implications for users and society
- Demonstrated project planning, research, and organizational skills as well as empathy, flexibility, and creativity in professional settings

Salary Range
$180,000 – $250,000 USD, commensurate with experience.
