General Overview
The Future of Privacy Forum (FPF) is seeking a Policy Associate / Policy Manager to join our Asia-Pacific (APAC) team, based in Singapore, depending on experience. FPF is a global non-profit organization that serves as a catalyst for privacy leadership and scholarship, advancing principled data practices in support of emerging technologies. Through our offices in Washington D.C., Brussels, Singapore, and Nairobi we bring together industry, academics, consumer advocates, and other thought leaders to explore the challenges posed by technological innovation and develop privacy protections, ethical norms, and workable business practices. We are looking for a driven professional with demonstrated experience and passion about exploring the nuances of privacy in a rapidly evolving policy environment. This role is ideal for a candidate who is motivated to work with global and regional thinkers, shapers, and movers on standards, policies, regulations, and business practices to address privacy challenges presented by new and emerging technologies, including AI.
Key responsibilities for this role include:
- Research, writing, and policy analysis
- Researching and drafting a wide range of documents – including newsletters, targeted updates, briefs, reports, and white papers – on issues relating to privacy, data protection, AI governance and technology policy.
- Translating complex legal and technical concepts into clear, accessible insights for diverse audiences, including policymakers, industry leaders, and general readers.
- Actively monitoring legal, policy, and regulatory developments relating to privacy, emerging technologies, and data protection in the APAC region, and keeping on top of global developments in these areas.
- Identifying key trends in data protection, privacy, AI governance and regulation, and emerging technology policy, and analyzing their implications for a wide range of stakeholders in the APAC region and globally.
- Managing stakeholders and members
- Engaging with stakeholders from government, industry, academia, and civil society from across the APAC region to advance FPF’s mission.
- Managing relationships with FPF members, including responding to inquiries, facilitating participation in FPF events and working groups, and ensuring that members derive strategic value from their membership.
- Supporting FPF teams in identifying new member prospects and strategic opportunities to expand FPF’s network and impact in the APAC region.
- Project management and global collaboration
- Driving the end-to-end management of policy projects, including managing timelines, tracking deliverables, and coordinating with internal and external stakeholders.
- Collaborating with FPF teams globally to ensure APAC perspectives are integrated into FPF’s policy publications.
- Enhancing FPF’s visibility as a thought leader
- Representing FPF at events, webinars, workshops, roundtables, and other engagements to enhance FPF’s visibility and thought leadership in the APAC region.
- Supporting the APAC team by preparing talking points and presentation materials for engagements across the region and globally.
- Office operations
- Providing administrative and logistical support for the APAC office, including coordinating events and activities.
Basic Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field, such as law, policy, government and politics, or a social science.
- 2-5 years of relevant work experience (e.g. in law, in-house, government, or public policy).
- Demonstrated experience, knowledge, and interest in privacy, data protection, and the regulation and governance of emerging technologies, including AI.
- Proven research, writing, and analytical skills, with the ability to learn, adapt, and find pragmatic solutions quickly in a fast-paced, rapidly evolving environment.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Self-starter, with the ability to work independently, and as a team player.
- Ability to work flexibly and productively in a hybrid work environment involving multiple time zones and stakeholders from diverse cultural backgrounds.
- Deep attention to detail, diligence and passion in turning in high standards of work, and the ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
- Proficiency in English and at least one language spoken in the APAC region (e.g. Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese, Mandarin, Bahasa Melayu / Indonesia, Thai etc.).
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and Google Suite.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Recent relevant work experience in a related field (e.g., law, government, or public policy) on issues relating to privacy, data protection, AI governance and regulation, and / or digital policy and regulation. In particular, experience working with major data protection or digital policy regulators in the APAC region would be a strong plus.
- Proven familiarity and experience with topical issues in privacy, data protection, and technology laws and regulations in the APAC region.
- Excellent research, writing, and analytical skills, with a track record of successful policy publications.
- Experience with event planning and/or project management.
Salary range: 65,000 – 80,000 USD gross per year, commensurate with experience.
