U.S. Privacy Landscape

Why Understanding U.S. Privacy Laws is Essential in 2025.

Commercial privacy in the United States is regulated through a maze of state and federal laws and regulations. There are sector-specific privacy laws at the state and federal levels, active federal enforcement bodies with broad mandates to protect consumer privacy across industries, and an emerging set of state-level comprehensive privacy laws. The U.S. Privacy Landscape course provides a broad view of this framework by providing overviews of its constituent elements. Practitioners can expect to come away with a foundational understanding of the various rules and obligations forming the U.S. Privacy Landscape.

What you will learn:

  • Existing U.S. privacy laws at the federal and state levels.
  • Federal Trade Commission (FTC) authority, recent enforcement actions, and rulemaking activities.
  • Trends in emerging comprehensive state privacy legislation.
  • Sectoral issues and laws, including youth privacy and safety, biometrics, automated decision-making technology, and health data.
